Second edition, with a short new preface, "published, with the permission of the author, by the Committee, appointed in London to superintend its cheap circulation, at the price of one shilling." This book was first issued in 1846; by the end of 1847 it had reached an eighth edition, aimed at an even wider audience and priced at sixpence. This is the first of the author's several books on public education; his view was essentially liberal. With a letter on state education in the United States. A fine copy, with "2nd Edn" stamped in gilt on the upper cover. CBEL III, 1723.
