Arnall, William A letter to the Reverend Dr. Codex, on the subject of his modest instruction to the crown London 1734
[Arnall, William.] A letter to the Reverend Dr. Codex, on the subject of his modest instruction to the crown, inserted in the Daily Journal of Feb. 27th 1733. From the second volume of Burnet's History. London: printed for T. Cooper, 1734. 36 pp. 8vo, disbound. First edition. An attack on Edmund Gibson, Bishop of London, for his efforts to prevent the consecration of Rundle to the see of Gloucester. William Arnall was one of the principle pamphleteers in the employ of Robert Walpole; Walpole was on the whole an admirer of Gibson, but the two did not always agree over conflicts between church and state. In this instance, Gibson prevailed. This pamphlet attracted a good deal of attention, and went quickly through five editions. Half-title present (a bit dust-soiled); a very good copy.
