Aesop Fables London 1708
Aesop. Fables, of Ūsop and other eminent mythologists: with morals and reflexions. By Sir Roger L'Estrange, Kt. The fifth edition corrected. London: printed for R. Sare, A. and J. Churchil, D. Brown, T. Goodwin, M. Wotton, J. Nicholson, G. Sawbridge, B. Tooke, and G. Strahan, 1708. (12), 29 [i.e. 33] (11), 550 pp. + an engraved frontispiece portrait, engraved title-page, and a final leaf of bookseller's advertisements. [With:] Fables and storyes moralized, being a second part of the fables of Ūsop, and other eminent mythologists, &c. By Sir Roger L'Estrange, Kt. Vol. II. The second edition. London; printed for Richard Sare, 1708. (10), 266 pp. + a six-page bookseller's catalogue at the end. Two vols., 8vo, contemporary calf, panelled in blind, red morocco labels. A complete set of this highly popular collection, assembled by the prominent pamphleteer, journalist, and sometime licenser of the press Roger L'Estrange; this was the most complete collection of fables in England that had yet been published. The first volume appeared as a folio in 1692, and was reprinted in that format in 1694, 1699, and 1704; this is the first octavo printing. The second volume was originally published in 1699, also in folio; this second edition was the final printing. It is clear that Vol. I was available for sale separately, and was promoted by the syndicate of booksellers whose names appear in the imprint; Richard Sare alone appears to have been involved in the second volume. In fine condition, complete with a portrait and engraved title-page in Vol. I, and all necessary leaves of ads; the engraved title is sometimes bound in the second volume. CBEL II, 1487.
