Aulnoy, Marie Catherine Jumelle de Berneville, comtesse d' (and Delariviere Manley). Memoirs of the court of England. In two parts. By the Countess of Dunois, author of the ingenious and diverting letters of the Lady's Travels into Spain. Now made English. Brought over from St. Malo's by an English officer at the last exchange of prisoners. London: printed and sold by B. Bragg, 1707. (8), 64, 81-208, 207-220; (2), 353-616 pp. 8vo, contemporary panelled calf, red morocco label (a bit rubbed). First edition in English; first published in 1695 as MŽmoires de la cour d'Angleterre. One of several popular novels of scandal and court intrigue by the Comtesse d'Aulnoy, who is now best remembered for her fairy tales; this one comprises an amorous history of the court of Charles II. The translator was Jodocus Crull, identified by his initials which appear at the end of the dedication. "The Lady's Paquet of Letters" is by the Tory novelist and pamphleteer Delariviere Manley; these comprise letters 1 to 24 in a longer work which she published in 1711, under the title Court Intrigues. Early armorial bookplate and signature of Penry Williams (1732), of Pembroke College, Oxford; somewhat earlier signature of Daniel Williams as well. Some signatures rather foxed and browned, owing to the inferior quality of the paper used, otherwise a very good copy. McBurney 28 (and 26a); CBEL II, 985.
