Bent, William London catalogue of books London  1791

[Bent, William.] The London catalogue of books, selected from the General Catalogue published in MDCCLXXXVI, and including the additions and alterations to September MDCCXCI. Classed under the several branches of literature, and alphabetically disposed under each head, with their sizes and prices. London: printed for W. Bent, 1791. 160 pp. [Bound with:] [Caption title:] Supplement, 1792, to the London Catalogue of Books. [London: 1792.] 8 pp. [Bound with:] Supplement, 1793, to the London Catalogue of Books. [London: 1793.] 8vo, contemporary marbled boards, later calf spine (corners worn). The second appearance of Bent's London Catalogue; it had first been published in 1773. "Modern book trade bibliography starts with William Bent (1747-1823) . . . Bent did not originally give publishers' names but he organized his various catalogues so that it was possible to find what books in print an author had written, or who had written on particular subjects." -- Pollard and Ehrman, The Distribution of Books by Catalogue, pp. 135-6. Bent also issued a somewhat different General Catalogue in 1779, 1785, and 1786, and a much shorter Modern Catalogue in 1788, 1789, 1795, and 1797. Uncommon; the ESTC (11/03) lists 12 copies (L, C, NCl, O; CaOHM, CtY, DLC, ICN, MnU, MBAt, MWA, PPL). This copy is unusual in having the two rare supplements for 1792 and 1793; of these the ESTC records one copy only of the first (O), and two copies of the second (O; CaOHM). In very good condition. On the front flyleaf is the following inscription in an early hand: "This book was printed by Wm. Duane at the office of Mr. Browne, Windmill Court, Smithfield, London, 1791." CBEL II, 296.
