Anderson, James. A practical treatise on peat moss. Considered as in its natural state fitted for affording fuel, or as susceptible of being converted intomold capable of fielding abundant crops of useful produce; with full directions for converting it from the state of peat into that of mold, and afterwards cultivating it as a soil. Edinburgh: printed for Robinson and Sons; G. Edwards; and T. Kay (London), 1794. xxvi, 150 pp. + a final errata leaf. 8vo, contemporary speckled calf, spine gilt, black morocco label (some rubbing of spine, with a small chip at the top). First edition. A very appealing presentation copy, inscribed on the half-title, "To Mr. George Culley with respectful compl. from the Author" (with "Dr. James Anderson, 1794" added immediately below); the recipient was a Northumberland farmer with an international reputation, whose Observations on Live Stock was first published in 1786, and several times reprinted. "Anderson is said to have done much for Scottish agriculture." -- DNB. Anderson also wrote on political economy; he corresponded with Bentham, and to some extent anticipated Ricardo's theory of rent. This is one of his least common books. The ESTC (on-line, 07/02) lists seven copies (L, CFm, E, O, REu, SAN; CaOTU), along with several copies of two re-issues, with cancel title-pages, and the name of the London bookseller T. Chapman in the imprint. In very good condition; with the Culley armorial bookplate. Fussell III, p. 59; Perkins 53.
