Anderson, James Practical treatise on draining bogs and swampy grounds London  1797

Anderson, James. A practical treatise on draining bogs and swampy grounds, illustrated by figures; with cursory remarks upon the originality of Mr. Elkington's mode of draining. To which are added, directions for making a new kind of strong, cheap, and durable fence, for rich lands; for erecting, at little expence, mill-dams, or weirs upon rivers, that shall be alike firm and curable; for effectually guarding against encroachments by the sea upon the land, and for gradually raising drowned fens, into sound grass-lands. As also, disquisitions concerning the different breeds of sheep, and other domestic animals. London: printed for G. G. and J. Robinson, 1797. (4)308 pp. (including two woodcut plates) + a folding engraved plate. 8vo, original drab boards, contemporary blue paper backstrip (some wear to spine). First edition. This volume was written to supplement a collection of essays on various aspects of agriculture first published in 1775, and several times reprinted; curiously, the date of the earlier work is here given as 1755. "Anderson is said to have done much for Scottish agriculture." -- DNB. George Washington is known to have had a copy of this book. Anderson also wrote on political economy; he corresponded with Bentham, and to some extent anticipated Ricardo's theory of rent. With a folding engraved plate, two further woodcut plates, and a number of small woodcut illustrations in the text. Aside from the slight surface wear to the spine, a fine fresh copy. Fussell III, 26; Kress B3323; Perkins 52.
