Agriculture: soil and manure Treatise on soils and manures London  1818

[Agriculture: soil and manure.] A treatise on soils and manures, as founded on actual experience, and as combined with the leading principles of agriculture: in which the theory and doctrines of Sir Humphy Davy, and other agricultural chemists, are rendered familiar to the experienced farmer. By a practical agriculturist. London: printed for T. Cadell and W. Davies; J. Cumming (Dublin); and W. Blackwood (Edinburgh), 1818. (4)iv(4), 176 pp. 8vo, contemporary half calf, spine gilt, red morocco label (a bit rubbed). First edition. Davy's Elements of Agricultural Chemistry, first published in 1813, was greeted by farmers with a mixture of respect and scepticism, as some of the scientific principles which Davy expounded did not accord well with day-to-day experience on the land. This book, written by an unidentified "agriculturist" in Hertfordshire, attempts to explain some of the inconsistencies. In very good condition, and scarce; the NUC lists three copies (DLC, CtY, PU-V). Perkins 1764; not in Fussell.
