Knapton; and S. Birt, 1737. xvi, 275(1) pp. + an engraved frontispiece portrait and two folding plates. 8vo, contemporary speckled calf, gilt, spine gilt (minor rubbing, upper cover slightly marked). First edition. The first substantial account of a prominent Elizabethan; Sutton (1532-1611) was reckoned the richest commoner in England. In the year of his death Sutton acquired the Charterhouse in Middlesex from the Duke of Suffolk for the sum of £13,000; the original institution, founded in 1371, had been dissolved in 1535, and the last prior executed. Sutton quickly established at the Charterhouse a free school for forty boys and a hospital for poverty-stricken gentlemen; the school, which attained a high degree of excellence, moved to London in 1872. A fine crisp copy, complete with a portrait of Sutton, a folding view of the Charterhouse, and a folding engraving of Sutton's tomb.
