Beaulieu, Luke de Claustrum animae: the reformed monastery London  1677

[Beaulieu, Luke de.] Claustrum animę: the reformed monastery; or, the love of Jesus. A sure and short, pleasant and easie way to heaven. In meditations, directions, and resolutions to love and obey Jesus unto death. In two parts. London: printed for Henry Brome, 1677. (26)117(1); (16)83 [i.e. 84], (4) pp. + a final leaf of bookseller's ads. 12mo, contemporary sheep, spine gilt, slightly later red morocco label (some wear to spine and corners). First edition. "A remarkably eloquent and original manual of devotions." -- DNB. Beaulieu was a Protestant divine who came to England from his native France about 1667 to avoid religious persecution. He later studied at Oxford, and served for some time as chaplain to the notorious Judge Jeffreys. The dedication here is to Dr. John Fell, Bishop of Oxford and Dean of Christ Church. Beaulieu's command of the English language, even after a residence of ten years, is admirable. Wing records a printing of this book in 1671, from a copy at the Bodleian, now "not found;" this is surely a ghost. Early signature on the title-page of Jane Synge; later armorial bookplate of Colonel Cooper, with a subsequent shelf label of the Markree Library ("re-arranged in 1913 by Bryan Cooper"). Wanting a front flyleaf; aside from the binding wear, a crisp copy, complete with the final leaf of ads. Wing B1571.
