BREITER, Christian August Hortus Breiterianus oder Verzeichniss aller derjenigen Gewächse, welche im Breiterschen botanischen Garten zu Leipzig gezogen und unterhalten werden... Leipzig, C.E. Franz, 1817

8vo, pp. [iv] lvi 558, with lithographed frontispiece showing the hothouses and part of the garden; some marginal spotting throughout due to the paper used, a very good copy in contemporary speckled boards, a bit rubbed. £550

First edition of this catalogue of plants, mostly exotics, in the botanic garden of Christian August Breiter (1776-1840), German botanist and head gardener to the Grand Duke of Saxe-Weimar. Close to 10,000 species are listed, including many plants from the Americas, South Africa, and Australia. The preface gives an account of the garden and its history, followed by a list of botanical writers referred to in the catalogue, and the geographical sources of the plants. We know from a very rare price list dated 1817 of plants for sale from the same garden that Breiter's was at least in part a commercial operation, and must have been one of the largest of its kind in Weimar at the time.
