Map, Copper engraving, 22 x 72.5cms cms, black and white, banderole naming Teflis in Latin and Persian script, light marginal waterstaining, blank verso. Tbilisi, on the Kura River, is still sometimes known by its Turkish name, Tiflis.

Chardin’s “Travels into Persia and the East Indies” were published in English and in his native French. Huguenot traveller, merchant and court jeweller to Charles II, Chardin travelled into Persia via the Black Sea in 1665 and 1671.
