Homann, Johann Baptist: Virginia, Marylandia et Carolina in America Septentrionali Britannorum [...] Nuremberg 1730
Map, Copper-engraving, 50 x 59 cms, original hand-colour. Blank verso. The large and decorative black and white cartouche shows the wealth of the country through its natural resources and trade with the local Indians, part of a perception of the Mid-Atlantic colonies which must have appeared very attractive to prospective immigrants including those from Germany. Homann has attempted to define the interior, but some details including the colonial boundaries are only approximate. New Jersey is split between East and West. Philadelphia is incorrectly shown to the West of the Delaware River, at a fork between the Schuyl Kill and an imaginary West New Jersey River. The Appalachian Lake in the south of the map presumably refers to Lake Carolina and Lake Moultrie in South Carolina. Homann has included part of the shoreline of Lake Erie, extending further south than is actually the case.
