Map, 34.5 x 48.5 cms, excellent original colour, light toning, repair to lower 14 cms of centrefold (no loss of paper), generous margins containing early ownership signature bottom right, French text to verso.
An important early map of the American Southeast based on the regional maps drawn by Jacques Le Moyne in Florida and John White in Virginia. It was one of the new maps prepared by Jodocus Hondius for his edition of Mercator’s Atlas, which he issued for the first time in 1606. The map is decorated with images from various sources probably including de Bry. Indian settlements in Florida and Virginia flank the cartouche, a ‘king and queen’ in Floridan dress are also shown, as are deer and a turkey. At sea are European vessels and monsters and to the left of the compass rose native Indians are shown with fish and a fire on board a canoe.
