Bevan, George Phillips: The Statistical Atlas of England, Scotland and Ireland [...]  W. & A.K. Johnston, Edinburgh and London 1882

Map, Large folio. 45 lithographed maps with original colour with a double page map of England and Wales and single page maps of Scotland and Ireland for each section. In addition to the preliminaries and publisher’s advertisements there are 75 pages of supporting text and tables of statistics. Half calf over publisher’s green pebble-grained cloth, rebacked and recornered.

A scarce and most interesting thematic atlas divided into fifteen subjects entitled: Agriculture, Criminal, Educational, Geological and Mining, Hydrographical, Industrial, Legal, Marine (Commercial), Military and Naval, Poorlaw and Pauperism, Political, Population, Railway and Telegraph, Religions, Sanitary. The atlas provides an interesting insight into Victorian pre-occupations and social conditions. Under the section which illustrates the criminal condition of the people one can see at a glance the number of known criminals or houses of bad character in a particular town or region. The section on the poorlaw and pauperism gives details of the numbers receiving relief, and the amounts spent (down to the last farthing in Scotland). The sanitary condition of the United Kingdom contains detailed information on the causes of death. The firm of Johnston pioneered and popularised thematic cartography, and according to D. Smith (Victorian Maps of the British Isles) this is possibly the only statistical atlas of the British Isles.
