"The vignette on the title is a woodcut of a stone slab, with a covered crown of flowers, and a garden basket reversed below. This appears to be the surrepitious edition of the Marquis de Chastelleux's travels, printed at Cassel, which is referred to in the Paris edition of 1786. It consists of extracts taken at random from his manuscript journals..." (Sabin 12226). - Initialy Chastellux's description of his voyage through Virginia and Pennsylvania was printed in an edition of only 24 copies at an american printer. On behalf of his friends he published his descriptions in Paris in two volumes in 1786. This copy is a preview which does not contain the whole text. - Some foxing, title-page stronger, the decorative binding a bit stained and rubbed.
