Edmond Hoyle (1671/2 - 1769) appears to have been a barrister by profession, but he gave lessons on playing whist, and his manuscript handbook on the subject developed into this famous and popular work. He was the first to write scientifically about the game, his Short Treatise on the Game of Whist first appearing in 1742. His name became synonymous after his death with any book on card games (see New D.N.B., v. 28). Innocêncio V, 334 cites 1768 edition only. Gonçalves Rodrigues, A tradução em Portugal, 3484.
