PASIO, Francesco, S.J. (1554-1612) Lettera annua di Giappone scritta nel 1601, e mandata... al M.R.P. Claudio Acquaviva Generale della Compagnia di Giesł. - Venezia, Ciotti, 1604
12mo. Mid 20th century light brown morocco, gilt fillets on covers, spine with raised bands and gilt, large inner gilt frame, gilt edges. 77 pp.; a charming copy, particularly fresh and attractively bound.
Second edition ("Titelauflage" of the first: Rome 1603). Pasio left Italy for the East in 1577; after a long stay in Lisbon first and Macao later, he reached Japan in 1584. In this very rare letter about the Jesuit activities in Japan at the end of the 16th and the beginning of the 17th century, Pasio describes the conversion of many Japanese, mentions the cities of Amangucci, Arima, Meaco, Nagasaki, Omura, Osaka etc., and writes about the cultural conditions of Japan at the time. Cordier BJ 241.
