ALCIATO, Andrea (1492-1550) Emblemata... - Lyon, Bonhomme, 1551
8vo. 17th c. calf, spine gilt and with a red leather label; joints and corners neatly repaired. Title within an architectural woodcut border, and 211 woodcut emblems. 226, (5) pp., all except 6 within Renaissance borders of varying design, and all ruled in brown; a good copy.
One of the most complete editions, with 98 more emblems than the Paris edition of 1540, and 127 more than the Venice edition of 1546. There is also an issue with the imprint of Rouillé, the only difference being the small printer’s device on title; according to Green and Landwehr also the borders to pages 225 and 226 are different, but in our copies of the two issues these borders are identical. Mortimer, Harvard (French), 16. Green, Alciati, 47 and 48. Landwehr, REB 53. Praz 250: «Scarce»
