Seconda edizione della non comune raccolta, assai interessante per gli studi leonardeschi di fisiognomica (prima ediz.: 1784). Cicognara 2036. Verga 53. Univ. of Rochester, Bibliogr. of the Guzzetta Leonardo Collection, nr. 57: «Having acquired Gerli's copperplates in 1829, Vallardi republished Gerli's volume of 1784 with commentary. The sixty-one plates reproduce drawings in the Codex Atlanticus and other manuscripts donated to the Ambrosiana... The majority of the engravings reproduce human figures, but there is sufficient variety to suggest the scope of Leonardo's activity. Vallardi also republished the introduction by Carlo Amoretti, "Ragionamento intorno ai disegni di Leonardo da Vinci," in which he summarizes the value of the drawings for instructing artists, shedding light on the history of the human spirit, bringing glory to the city of Milan. Gerli's reproductions proved durable and influential and were adapted in editions of the Trattato and other books devoted to Leonardo».
