From the library of Antoine-Auguste Renouard
(APROSIO, Angelico, 1607-81) La Biblioteca Aprosiana. Passatempo autunnale... - Bologna, Manolessi, 1673
12mo. Bound ca. 1815 by Joseph Thouvenin for Antoine-Auguste Renouard in straight-grained red morocco, gilt fillet on covers, spine with raised bands, gilt fillets, title and binder’s name; inner gilt dentelles. With an engr. frontispiece showing the interior of the Aprosiana library. 50 (incl. frontispiece), (10), 733 (recte 683: the numeration jumps from 336 to 387) pp. A particularly fine and uncut copy, from the libraries of Renouard (described in his “Catalogue de la bibliothèque d’un Amateur, 1819: “choisie sur deux exemplaires”), John Ferguson (pencil signature on flyleaf, dated 3 July 1888), and Bernard Breslauer.
First edition of one of the earliest and most comprehensive select bibliographies of Italian literature. The work contains the author's autobiography (261 pp.), and the list of books in his library, a large number of which had been donated to him by scholars with whom he was in correspondence. An unusual feature of the catalogue is the arrangement in alphabetical order of donors, presumably done to attract more gifts; both parts are replete with biographical and bibliographical information. Although the work ends with letter C, and remained incomplete, it provides a very interesting picture of the learned world in Aprosio's day. Brunet I, 325. Nicolini, Antichi cataloghi, 120. Breslauer & Folter 67.
