MERCKLIN, G.A. (?-1700) Tractatio med. curiosa de Ortu & Occasu Transfusionis Sanguinis... - Nürnberg, Zieger, 1679

Small 8vo. Contemp. marbled boards; corners worn, extremities of spine defective. With an engr. frontispiece. (26), 112, (4) pp.; a fresh copy.

First (only ?) edition of one of the earliest treatises on blood transfusions and its history. Mercklin, a German doctor, describes the attempts of some contemporaries, such as Andreas Libavius, Giovanni Colle, Richard Lower, J. B. Dennis, etc., and examines various kinds of transfusions (also from animals to man!). It is not surprising, however, that in view of the knowledge of the time, he emphasizes the dangers of the operation and is doubtful about its usefulness. Osler 3384. Waller 6748. Eimas, Heirs of Hippocrates, 653. Krivatsy 7774. Bound at the beginning are four works on haematology by Moritz Hoffman (1622-98), mentioned by Mercklin as "fautor meus venerandus", published at Altdorf in 1663 and later, each one of about 70 pp., three of which are in Krivatsy (5891, 5887, and 5890).
