Rare first edition of a remarkable work on astronomy by the most distinguished opponent of Galilei and the Copernican system. «Despite the conservatism of the age in which he worked, Riccioli made honest and important contributions to science» (DSB XI, 411). Besides numerous and valuable personal observations the author offered a detailed account on astronomic knowledge of the period and gave an important impulse to the study of astronomy. Of particular interest are the 2 lunar maps drawn by Fr. M. Grimaldi, Riccioli's student, with whom he had named the craters of the moon. Houzeau & L. 9230. Cinti, Galilei, 145. Norman 1827.
