This ambitious historical study provides the best record of Palladio's architectural work. The splendid volumes, which illustrate all Palladian buildings, are noteworthy not only for the large number of carefully measured and drawn plans, elevations, sections and details, but also for the accompanying text; they allow for the first time to differentiate the true work of the artist from that erroneously attributed to him. Illustrations and text are by Bertotti Scamozzi, the distinguished architect from Vicenza, Palladio’s home town. This is the second edition in French, published simultaneously also in Italian; for the first edition of 1776-83, cf. Berlin Kat. 2722, Cicognara 598, and Fowler 231. First printing of the separate work on Roman baths (Les Thermes), based on Lord Burlington's edition of 1730. Berlin Kat. 1877, Cicognara 599, Fowler 234.
