RELAND, Hadrian Palestina, ex monumentis veteribus illustrata... - Nürnberg, Monath, 1716.
4to. 18th century vellum. Allegorical frontisp., a portrait, a plate, a folding genealogy, 2 folding tables, 10 maps (3 large folding), and 10 text illus., mostly of medals. (14), 787, (85, last 2 blank) pp.; light browning throughout, occasionally getting pronounced.
Second edition, corrected, of this fundamental description of Palestine (first edition: Utrecht 1714). Reland, prof. of Oriental languages and antiquities at Utrecht, wrote a number of distinguished works, this one being his most ambitious and important. It is divided in three parts containing thorough physical and topographical descriptions of the country, an account on distances between various places, and a surprisingly comprehensive and scholarly dictionary of cities and villages rich of interesting information. At the end there is a very detailed index. Röhricht 296. Brunet IV,1204: «Ouvrage très estimé.»
