ALBERTI, Rafael. Coplas de Juan Panadero (Libro I [All published]). Recopiladas y ordenadas por Rafael Alberti. 10 aleluyas de Toņo Salazar. Montevideo, Ediciones Pueblos Unidos, [1949].

8vo, pp. 190, [8], with 10 full-page illustrations by Toņo Salazar; lightly browned throughout, small glue stain to half title; generally a good copy in the original illustrated wrappers, slightly spotted.

First edition of this collection of political poems by Rafael Alberti, which he attributes to the fictional poet Juan Panadero. Panadero is a poet of the people, an Andalucian and a fighter in the Spanish Civil war, now in political exile in South America. Alberti uses Panadero’s voice to express the grief of exile, and to expound on his own political ideas.

The work is illustrated with 10 satirical cartoons by the Salvadoran caricaturist, illustrator and diplomat Antonio (‘Toņo’) Salazar (1897-1986), also in exile in Montevideo in the 1940s.

With a presentation inscription on half title, ‘Por Angela Tigero’, signed by Rafael Alberti and Toņo Salazar.
