[AUSTEN, Jane]. Pride and Prejudice: a Novel. In three Volumes … Second Edition. London: Printed for T. Egerton … 1813.
3 vols., 12mo., with the half-titles (small hole in that to volume I); signature F foxed in volume II, but a fine copy in contemporary quarter polished calf and grey drab boards, spines ruled gilt and lettered direct.
Second edition, published in the same year as the first and just as hard to come by in a fine contemporary binding. There are a few printing house corrections in the text, but ‘we must assume that the novelist, having sold the copyright, was given no opportunity to make any alterations in subsequent editions’ (Gilson). The ‘greatest blunder in the printing … in page 220 v.3, where two speeches are made into one’ (JA to Cassandra, 4 February 1813), remains uncorrected. Gilson A4; Keynes 4.
