In this very rare work Varnhagen vehemently defends himself against accusations put forward by João Francisco de Lisboa in the Jornal de Timon. He had criticised Varnhagen for advocating in his História geral do Brasil that the Indian tribes should be converted and civilized, since Lisboa believed that the irreparable antagonism between barbarism and civilization would continue to be the principal cause of the extermination of indigenous groups. Varnhagen held that the tribes as barbarians enjoyed the fertile and beautiful land of Brazil more or less by default, without the benefit of spiritual peace or culture, and that they should be civilized. When in Lima in 1862 he had prepared a series of arguments, some of which had been printed there. He later changed his mind and reissued the pamphlet, including part of his defence put forward by his brother-in-law, Frederico Augusto Pereira de Moraes, and published in 1859 under the pseudonym of 'Erasmo.'
