ELM Press. Stewart, Susan. The Elements. Poem by Susan Stewart with Lithographs by Enid Mark. Wallingford, PA ELM Press 2002
One of 45 hand-numbered copies, all on mould-made English Somerset paper, with three sections of the poetry printed on fold out sheets of various Japanese papers, signed by the poet, Susan Stewart, and the artist, Enid Mark. Page size: 11x 30 inches; 36pp; + 3 overlay pages. Bound by Sarah Creighton: silver-gray Italian book cloth over boards; blind stamped, with title stamped in palladium on gray paper label, gray Twinrocker hand-made paper endpapers. Printed in 14pt. Monotype Dante, cast by Michael and Winifred Bixler and printed by master printer, Daniel Keleher at Wild Carrot Letterpress. The lithographs were conceived with a camera but manipulated digitally with Photoshop software to generate film used to create duotone and tritone images. Film was transferred to plates and printed as hand lithographs by Timothy P. Sheesley at Corridor Press. The artist states that each of the sections of THE ELEMENTS - air, fire, earth, and water, is defined by a visual image. The image is introduced as a horizontal band that has its won rhythm, fading and increasing in dimension and intensity as the pages turn. On the final page opening within each section, three-color lithographs bleed over the four edges of the book. Throughout the work, the concrete forms of the sections of the poem, unique to this volume with its wide format, become an integral part of the visual imagery. The author's weaving of Western myths and literature on air, fire, earth, and water, with themes of love and strife, unfold as a meditation on time and mortality.
