Estanislao del Campo (1834-1880) is one of the most popular Argentine poets; his gaucho- burlesque poem - here reprinted - is his most popular work. The CARTA tells of Anastasio the Chicken who, by chance, attends a performance of Gounod's FAUST. Unable to distinguish between reality and fiction, he takes the opera's events to heart. The images herein - of Faust and the chicken-man are fabulous - a fantasy of unending imagination.
