Carrie Chapman Catt (1859-1947), suffragist and women's rights advocate, was President of the National American Woman Suffrage Association when the Nineteenth Amendment, known as the Anthony Amendment, was passed. Succeeding Anthony in 1900, Catt developed a two-prong campaign which came to be known as Mrs. Catt's "Winning Plan" [NAW] and which sought passage of a suffrage amendment while continuing to push for winning suffrage for women on a state level. Specifically, Catt cleared the path for the Nineteenth Amendment by leading the NAWSA in a campaign in 1917 to unseat four unsympathetic senators. According to NAW, "To Mrs. Catt more than any other single figure beside Susan B. Anthony...American women owe their right to vote." Nettie Rogers Shuler (1862-1939), suffragist and clubwoman, spent her life working for the woman suffrage movement. NAW points out that the first decade of the twentieth century was the woman's club movement provide a training ground for women who would become organizers in the suffrage movement. Shuler was a prime example, when as president of the Western New York Federal of Women's Clubs, her organization was the first of the General Federation of Women's Clubs to admit suffrage clubs as affiliates. By 1917 she was Mrs. Catt's closest aid, working on the campaign in New York. Here, Catt undertakes a history of the woman suffrage movement in the US, from colonial times to the 1920 success. Rather than concentrate on personalities, Catt details the political in and outs of the 150+ year struggle. As a first-hand account it is an invaluable record. NAW I, pp. 309.
