Benjamin Griffith Brawley (1882-1939), historian and teacher of African American literature and social history, was one of the towering African American intellectuals of his time. He wrote this work while Dean of Morehouse College. This slender volume begins with a sketch of and dedication to Joanna P. Moore (1883- 1916), who was a white Baptist missionary with a life-long commitment to the education and betterment of Southern African Americans. Pages 7 -12 contain "The Negro Woman In American Life", and the balance of the book comprises chapters on Harriet Tubman; Nora Gordon (1866-1901), missionary in the Congo; Metta V.W. Fuller (1877-1968), important African-American sculptor; Mary McLeod Bethune (1875-1955), educator and political activist; and Mary Church Terrell (1863-1954), civil rights leader. A very scarce book. Title Page reads: "Women of Achievement / Written for The Fireside Schools / Under the auspices of the Woman's American Baptist Home Mission Society..." . Interestingly, The Woman's American Baptist Home Mission Society holds the copyright.
