LANDI Costanzo. Lettera dell'illustre S. Costanzo Landi, Conte de Compiano, sopra una Impresa d'un Pino...

Milan, G.A. de gli Antonii, 1560. 8vo: on the title-page a large woodcut of the device of a pine tree. 18th century ornamental paper wrappers. A very rare little work which only appeared in this edition. The author, from Piacenza, was a pupil of Alciat and later became a noted botanist. He starts with a discussion on the composing of devices and mottoes and goes on to give a survey of the qualities of pine trees as well as their symbolic meaning. In particular, of course, he discusses in detail the emblematic significance of the device he proposes for Conte Prospero Tedesco. Cicognara 1910; Praz p.92; Landwehr 441; De Renzi, Storia della Medicina in Italia III, p.98; not in Adams; only the Folger copy reported to NUC
