GIOVIO Paolo Elogia doctorum virorum ab avorum memoria publicatis ingenii monumentis illustrium. Praeter nova Ioan. Latomi Bergani in singulos Epigrammata: adiecimus, ad priora italice editionis, illustrium aliquot Poetarum alia. Antwerp, J. Beller, 1557
8vo: device on title-page. Contemporary calf, old rebacking, covers worn and scratched, refurbished.
First edition of Latomus' greatly enlarged edition. The collection of portraits in Giovio's Museo quickly became famous throughout Europe and the idea was copied, most notably by Cosimo de'Medici. Under each portrait Giovio hung a slip of vellum on which was written a Latin verse on the subject. Giovio published these Elogia in 1546 and again in an expanded version in 1551. In this edition Latomus not only adds Latin verses of his own composition to each subject but introduces a great number of verses by a wide range of authors, including Doletus, Beza, Scaliger and Flaminius, an index to whom appears at the end. A notable example of the scope of the enlargements is Erasmus: to the verses published by Giovio are added two by Latomus himself and a further five by Secundus, Cognatus, Coppus, Vallembertus and Morellus.
