BOTTAZZO Gian Giacopo Dialogi maritimi...et alcune rime maritimi di M. Nicolo Franco et d'altri diversi spiriti dell' Accademia de gli Argonauti.
Mantua, Jac. Ruffinelli, 1547 8vo in 4s: Venturino Ruffinelli's device of Fortuna on title-page. Contemporary limp vellum lacks ties; some wormholes in gutters of covers and first and last 6 leaves; one gathering has a wormtrack which just affects a few letters; a few marginal annotations. Only edition of this curious work by a member of the Accademia degli Argonauti, a society, founded in 1540, which met in Casale di Monferrato to discourse and versify on the sea and navigation. The dialogues deal with Geography, the Winds and the Celestial Sphere. A fourth, on Alexander the Great, is announced in the Contents, but at the end of the third discourse there is a note from the printer saying that it will appear together with two dialogues by Franco in a second volume. This projected publication came to nothing. The verses which make up the second part are by several members of the Accademia including Arrivabene; the larger part is by Nicolo Franco, the notorious friend of Aretino, who was living in Casale at the time.
