MELA Pomponius: OLIVARIUS Petrus Joannes. De situ orbis libri tres: Un cum auctario P.I. Olivarii Valentii instauratione totius libelli & castigatione perquam multorum locorum insertis quoque locis plerisque in eodem libello desideratus.

Paris, J. Kerver, 1557. 4to: unicorn device on title-page. Contemporary limp vellum, lacks ties. Old library stamp and inscription on title-page, an extremely nice large copy in its first binding. A finely printed edition with the annotations of Pedro Juan Oliver, the Spanish-born scholar. Estienne thought well enough of this version to include it in his collection of Dionysius Periegetes and other geographical treatises. The four fine arabesque initials (50x50mm) are from the set cut for Kerver's edition of the Polifilo published in 1546. The set has been described by Johnson as the first purely arabesque alphabet from Paris.
