Baker, H.F. AbelÕs Theorem and the Allied Theory Including the Theory of the Theta Functions. Cambridge: At the University Library 1897

[xx], 684 pp., Dark blue cloth with gilt spine.

Spine extremities lightly frayed, old bookplates and rubberstamps of Bedford College for Women on front pastedown and title-page. Aside from markings, a very good, tight copy, partially unopened. , Baker (1866-1956) was a British mathematician who served as Lowndean professor of astronomy and geometry (1914Ð36). His principal interest was in the theory of algebraic functions and related topics, and later in partial differential equations (related to what would become known as solitons), and Lie groups. ÒHis treatise contains a wealth of information, including many special (sometimes almost forgotten) results and examples which are again of great interest to geometers, analysts, and physicistsÓ (Zentralblatt MATH Database 1931 Ð 2001).
