[BORELLI, Alphonso]/ZERILLI, Diego. Confermazione d’una sentenza del Sig. Alfonso Borelli di nuovo contradetta da Fra Stefano de gl’Angeli nelle sue terze considerazioni. Naples Cavallo 1668

First edition. One of several contributions by Borelli in the ongoing Copernican controversy originally between Stefano Degl’ Angeli and G. B. Riccioli but now including the famous scientist. Though allegedly written by his student Diego Zerilli, most scholars believe this work is authored by Borelli himself. In it he counters Angeli’s criticism contained in the “Terze Considerationi” of his De vi percussionis. In this latter work, Borelli had demonstrated the illogic of Riccioli’s assertion of the immobility of the earth, stating that Riccioli did not take into account the direction of the velocity of a falling body when making his calculations. In the Confermazione, he reasserts his view that in the hypothesis of the earth’s motion, falling bodies should follow a vertical trajectory with a deviation to the east.
