A presentation copy of the first edition, in original boards. This is John Howard’s second major writing following the State of the Prisons in England and Wales (1777). Eight years later, he started to investigate the condition of the lazarettos and the best means for the prevention of the plague. This book is his report of an extensive trip to the Mediterranean cities (including forty-two day confinement to the lazaretto in Venice) and proposes a number of reforms for the English and the continental lazarettos. The latter half of the volume deals with his observations on the sanitary conditions in prisons and hospitals.
