(AUCTION CATALOGUE: CHAUVELIN). Catalogue des Livres de la Bibliothéque de feu Messire Germain-Louis Chauvelin, Ministre d'État, Commandeur des Ordres du Roi, et Ancien Garde des Sceaux de France;
dont la Vente commencera Jeudi, 1er Juillet 1762... xii, 320 pp. 8vo, attractive 19th-century antique mottled sheep, spine gilt, red morocco lettering piece on spine. Paris: Lottin & Musier, 1762. A very uncommon sale catalogue. Chauvelin (1685-1762), was minister of foreign affairs for France from 1727 to 1737. He facilitated the Treaty of Vienna which has been described as the sole glorious act of the reign of Louis XV. However, in 1737 Chauvelin was forced into exile because of court intrigues and was not allowed to return to Paris until just before his death. This catalogue, which has been priced throughout in a contemporary hand, contains 2777 lots. It is particularly rich in history and civil law. With an excellent author index at end. Fine copy and scarce.
