PARRY, EDWARD

ANON Capt. W.E. Parry ... of the Polar Expedition 1819-23. England (?), after 1821

Original pencil drawing, 188 x 133 mm., ink inscription.

Pencil copy of the famous portrait of Edward Parry, which was published after his outstandingly successful expedition of 1819-20. Parry stands before a seascape background in his naval tunic, holding a telescope, looking terribly satisfied with his achievements.

Parry was second-in-command of Captain John Ross's naval expedition to the Arctic Seas. He spent nearly ten years exploring the Canadian Arctic in search of a North-West Passage. One of his most notable achievements was his exploration in 1827 of the farthest point in the Arctic at that time. His years of service in the area of Arctic exploration were honoured in 1829 when he was knighted. This was the same year that he accepted an appointment as commissioner for the Australian Agricultural Company.
