FIELD, Barron
BALLANTINE, William A Treatise on the Statute of Limitations. London, Printed for J. Butterworth, 1810
Octavo; some minor staining but a very good copy in contemporary calf.
From the library of Barron Field with his bookplate. As a significant contemporary legal text, this is a pleasing association copy from the library of one of Australia's first civilian judges.
Field was called to the Bar in 1814, but had previously written An Analysis of Blackstone's Commentaries (London, 1811), which was frequently reprinted. In May 1816 he was appointed to replace J. H. Bent as judge of the Supreme Court of Civil Judicature in New South Wales, and with his newly-wedded wife Jane, reached Sydney next February in the female convict ship Lord Melville. He went on to an influential career, and was heavily involved with many benevolent societies. He left Australia for England in 1824, and was later appointed to a position in Gibraltar.
