ANDERSEN, HANS CHRISTIAN.

Tales and Fairy Stories. Translated by Madame de Chatelain. Illustrated by Henry Warren.

Description

Uncut in the orig. full blue clothbinding w. richly gilt decorated back and gilt and blindstamped front board (Bone & Son, London). Wear to capitals, inner hinges a bit weak, otherwise a nice and clean copy, illustrated w. 8 plates.

Later edition (the first appeared in 1852) of Chatelain's fairy tale-translation, the 6th English Andersen fairy tale-translation to appear, and the one considered the very best of the English translations that appeared within Andersen's life-time (the first four appeared in 1846 and the fifth in 1847). As opposed to the other early fairy tale-translations, Chatelain's is very accurate and reliable. Interestingly enough, many of the fairy tales have received new titles in her translation. The translation comprises 45 fairy tales.
