BEDE The History of the Church of Englande... Oxford, Shakespeare Head Press 1930
Quarto, title-page printed in red & black, uncut large paper format; original quarter calf with marbled boards; a fine and handsome copy with the publisher's limitation slip loosely inserted.
This beautiful Shakespeare Head Press edition is a lavish and sumptuous celebration of Bede's contribution to English theological heritage. Printed to commemorate the rediscovery of Bede in the sixteenth century (especially John Laet's first Antwerp imprint of 1565), this edition is a magnificent example of typography, composition and binding finesse. The calfskin used in the binding was tanned under the supervision of Douglas Cockerell, to produce a natural and unadulterated skin faithful to the bindings of the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries.
This edition was limited to 475 copies.
