NHAYA, PEDRO DA.
BARROS, João de Scheeps-togt van Pedro da Nhaya Na Oost-Indien... Leyden, Pieter van der Aa 1706
Small octavo, engraved title vignette and two folding plates; in fine condition in recent marbled wrappers.
Narrative of the voyage of Pedro da Nhaya to create a settlement on the East African coast. In 1502 Vasco da Gama had reached Sofala, and sent back reports to Portugal of gold-based wealth there. In 1505 the Portuguese sent out a fleet of six ships under Da Nhaya: they built a fort close to the Arab town, which was soon attacked by Bantus acting on the instigation of the Arabs. The attackers were driven off and the Arabs forced to acknowledge Portuguese rule. It took only a few years for the Portuguese to capture control of all the former Arab sultanates on the East African coast.
This narrative, adapted from the original version by the Portuguese chronicler Barros, was produced by the Dutch anthologist and publisher Pieter van der Aa in his series Naaukeurige versameling der gedenk-waardigste zee en land-reysen na Oost en West-Indiën.
