MAORI

ADAMS, Arthur H Hinemoa: a Maori Legend. For soli, chorus & orchestra... Wellington,  1896

Octavo, pp. 12; a fine copy stapled in the original printed pink wrappers.

Rare: first edition of Adams's first published verse. Born in New Zealand, Adams came to Australia to work as a journalist in about 1897. He was closely associated with the "Bulletin" for many years, editing its Red Page from 1906-1909. He then edited "The Lone Hand" from 1909-1911, and subsequently the "Sydney Sun". From his rather powerful position as a literary critic, Adams promoted Australian dramatists whom he believed were being overlooked by local theatrical entrepreneurs.

First performed and published in New Zealand, his "Hinemoa" was also performed in Sydney in 1897 and the text was reprinted there in the programme of the concert held by the Sydney Philharmonic Society.
Bagnall, H857; Miller, p. 282 (annotation); Serle, p. 1.
