BARRINGTON

ANON Portrait of George Barrington. Liverpool, Nuttall, Fisher & Dixon, 1810

Stippled engraving, 98 x 76 mm.; good.

Barrington's rollercoaster ride from notorious felon to "zealous" chief constable of Parramatta was well-documented by the press of his day and celebrated in the form of books about his life, and in images such as this. Barrington is shown here free from any hint of wrongdoing, as opposed to other pictures where he is shown being caught in the act of theft or surrounded with the lockpicks and other tools of his earlier trade - the very definition of a man of upright moral character.
Nan Kivell and Spence, p. 23.
