Folio. (2) ff. with title p. drawn & engraved by John Vendramini, & libretto, 46 pp. of musical notation. Half calf.
A Paz da Europa was one of the composer's most accomplished works and, according to Vieira, shows the influence of Haydn and the Italian style. Domingo Bomtempo (1775-1842) was faithful to the old native tradition of disseminating education to a thoroughly democratic degree. It was due to his acquaintance with the Philharmonic Society in London that the first Sociedade Filarmónica was established in Lisbon (1822). From this, and also from the royal edict of John VI that each regiment should have its military band, may be traced the growth of local popular bands throughout the country . . (Ann Livermore, Music, in Portugal and Brazil, ed. H.V. Livermore, p. 182). Vasconcellos (Os músicos portuguezes) comments that nearly all Bomtempo's works were printed in England and France and in handsome editions, but he does not cite this work. Ownership signature on title p. & f. (1) recto, small hole in top right margin of p. 45/56. Vieira, Dic. bibliográfico de músicos portugueses, 122-124. João Domingos Bomtempo (1775-1842), ed. João Pedro d'Alvarenga, B14, p. 155. Not in in Angelés & Subirá, Cat. musical de la Bibl. Nac. de Madrid, Azevedo-Samodães, Palha, Ameal, Ávila-Perez or Pinto de Mattos.
