The enlarged second edition of a work which first appeared in 1824. In September 1808 Lord Minto, governor of Bengal, had ordered Admiral Drury to procede to Macao to ensure that the city could be properly defended against possible attacks by the French. But the Chinese declined such protection, maintaining that they could defend their own coasts, and the Portuguese governor resisted interference. The author led a seafaring life from an early age and made several voyages to India and China, undertaking his last one in 1835. Part II, Invasão das tropas inglezas em Macão e sua retirada occupies pp. 89-161. Cordier III, 1900. Innocêncio IV, 370. Welsh 4578. Pinto de Mattos 25 (gives date as 1853).
