In the preface . . Beauchamp writes that he devoted seven years to assembling the material needed for writing his book (Borba de Moraes), who also comments that in spite of the work being a plagiarism of Southey's History of Brazil it was rapidly translated into Portuguese, and published in Rio in 1816, whereas Southey's history did not appear until 1862, in a very poor translation. The two plates depict highly romanticised incidents from Brazilian history. Small hole in margin of Vol. II, p. 405/6 caused by acidity. Tears repaired in folding map. Borba de Moraes I, 92. Sabin 4154. Rodrigues 365.
